Payment Plan
Paying for a college education is one of the first major financial decisions a student will make. The payment plan has scheduled payment installments designed to help a student manage the costs and pay balances by the end of the semester.
Benefits of Enrolling in a Payment Plan
- Smaller, manageable payments-Instead of paying a large lump sum upfront, costs can be spread over monthly installments.
- Reduce financial stress-Breaking payments into smaller amounts supports more effective budgeting and helps prevent unexpected financial strain.
- Avoid late fees-Avoid monthly service charges that are assessed on unpaid billed balances.
- No need for loans (in some cases)-Helps reduce or even eliminate the need to take on student loan debt.
Enrollment Requirements
- Must be registered in the current semester.
- Must have charges in the current semester.
Important Information for those enrolled in the Payment Plan.
- Fall and Spring semester payment plans will have five installments and the Summer semester plan will have three installments.
- Payments are due by the 15th of each month.
- A $10.00 fee will be assessed for any missing, late, or partial Payment Plan payment.

*** For those who choose NOT to enroll in the Payment Plan by the deadline and have a current semester balance of $200 or more…
- A $25.00 Account Maintenance Fee will be assessed if not enrolled by the first enrollment deadline.
- A 0.5% Account Balance Service Fee will be assessed on the current semester balance on a monthly basis. For the Summer 2026 semester, a 0.5% Account Balance Service Fee will be assessed on 6/16/26 and 7/16/26. For the Fall 2026 semester, a 0.5% Account Balance Service Fee will be assessed on 9/16/26, 10/16/26, 11/16/26 and 12/16/26 (or on the next business day).
- Late enrollment is available if not enrolled by the first enrollment period. If enrolling late, the $25 Account Maintenance fee will be assessed.
Payment amounts are subject to change if any charges or credits post after enrolling in the Payment Plan. Payments automatically adjust if the account balance changes (e.g., financial aid or schedule changes).
Enrollment in the current semester at New Mexico State University requires the prior semester balance to be below $600 at time of course registration for subsequent semesters. The NMSU Payment Plan does not exempt the student from meeting the prior term balance at the time of registration. The Payment Plan is a separate agreement with NMSU.
IMPORTANT: The Payment Plan is not the same as Auto Payment. Upon enrolling in the Payment Plan and submitting the first payment, the student or proxy will be prompted to set up Auto Pay using the same payment method. If Auto Pay is not selected at that time, the student or proxy will need to manually make each remaining payment by the due dates. Auto Pay can still be activated later by visiting https://pay.nmsu.edu. Once logged in, select Payment Plan on the left-hand menu, select 'Set up auto pay' and follow the prompts.
Federal Financial Aid
Students should complete any requirements to receive financial aid as soon as possible to ensure awarded funds are available to use toward their financial charges.
- Students who have not completed their financial aid arrangements in time to receive their awards by the due date MAY need to enroll in a payment plan.
The Financial Aid disbursement schedule can be found HERE .
